The Adoption Process
The adoption process to adopt a Collie from Collie Rescue Network is outlined below. We require all prospective adopters to complete each step before a Collie will be placed into your home. Each step in the process is designed to better match a rescued Collie's individual personality with that of each family's unique lifestyle. Please note that the completion of any of the steps outlined below in no way implies acceptance or approval of adoption. Collie Rescue Network retains the right to refuse adoption to any person at any time for any reason.
Step One: The Adoption Application
The first step is filling out the Adoption Application. The application allows CRN to determine what you are looking for in a Collie in order to best match your family and your home with the right dog for you. Some Collies are fine with hardwood flooring and some are terrified of any slippery surface. Some Collies make wonderful jogging buddies, some make wonderful camping pals and some are couch potatoes who need short walks each day. Some families don't mind a "counter surfing" Collie while others would prefer a with advanced basic obedience skills. The application gives us a better idea of what type of Collie would best fit into your home.
Step Two: Meeting the Collie
The second step in the adoption process is for you and your family to actually meet the Collie in person. This meeting gives you a better idea of the Collie's individual personality and allows you a better feel of how this Collie might fit into your home and family life. Remember that every dog is an individual and even though as a breed Collies may share many similar temperament traits, a lot will also depend on how the Collie has been raised, past experience and exposures along with just plain old individuality.
Step Three: The Home Visit
The home visit is a very important part of our adoption process and no adoption will take place without this step being completed. A home visit is when a rescue volunteer comes to your home and visits with all your family members present. We are not there to judge your home, your family and/or your lifestyle. The reason for the home visit is to get to know your family a little better in our quest to make the best match possible between a Collie in rescue and your family. This step in the process is also a great opportunity for you to ask the home visit volunteer questions about rescue, rescue dogs and get tips and thoughts on how to help new dogs settle into their new homes.
Step Four: The Adoption Contract and the Adoption Donation
The last step in the process is reading and signing the Adoption Contract. The contract is signed by both the adopters and a CRN representative. The purpose of the contract is to outline and set into agreement what is expected of the adoptive family in regards to future care of their new Collie. It also states that if any time during the lifetime of the Collie, for any reason whatsoever, you can no longer care for your adoptive Collie, the Collie comes back to CRN. This is also when the adoption donation is paid. We request a minimum donation of $350.00 to help off-set the costs incurred by the Collie while in the care of CRN. Please note that this amount almost never covers the costs of micro-chipping, spaying/neutering, wellness exams, vaccinations, medications, grooming and any other of the myriad of things a rescue Collie requires before being considered adoptable. Currently, the average cost for a Collie in the care of CRN is approximately $600.00.
